While Neuralink has kept its operations covert this far, Elon can’t seem to tempt himself from teasing the community with features. And this last tease has set transhumanist music enthusiasts’ pants on fire.
Computer scientist Austin Howard quoted Musk’s job posting tweet and asked “If we implement Neuralink – can we listen to music directly from our chips? Great feature,” Musk replied with a rather blunt “Yes”.
Musk is set to reveal more details about the secretive company’s endeavors in the following month and has begun to unveil tiny details slowly as a tease.
At one point, Musk said that Neuralink “could help control hormone levels and use them to our advantage (enhanced abilities and reasoning, anxiety relief, etc.).” Apart from this, there’s also a research paper by Elon Musk himself detailing how it is going to go down.
The technology will be focused on improving the lives of people suffering from brain diseases and disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Although the end aim is more transhumanist, the company aims to improve the cognitive performance of humankind through machinery integration.
According to Musk, the operation of inserting the chip will somewhat resemble the Lasik eye surgery. The procedure will be partially handled by a neurosurgeon robot, the research paper details “Each thread can be individually inserted into the brain with micron precision for avoidance of surface vasculature and targeting specific brain regions. The electrode array is packaged into a small implantable device that contains custom chips for low-power on-board amplification and digitization”While non-headphone headphones have been around for a while, this is the first attempt at bypassing the hearing apparatus for this purpose. Animal trials of Neuralink were previously conducted and human trials were set to take place this year, though we are yet to get an update on that.
